A childcare assistant must be: able to monitor and organize activities for children; compassionate; able to work with children and communicate effectively with parents; collaborate with staff; become dynamic, perceptive, prompt; able to make correct decisions and plans when children are at risk.

Childcare assistants are responsible for the following obligations: to control and monitor childcare trainees in offering services and to oversee children when play activities are taking place; develop activities that will increase the social, educational and behavioural actions of children; offer care services for children of all ages; maintain a polite, professional relationship with parents; ensure that children are kept safe; maintain information and details of each child and explain policy to parents; ensure that activities are organized according to curriculum objectives; employ other assistants for coordinating position advancement; create and apply strategies on a variety of educational subjects.

Childcare specialists are required to cater to children in different environments, like schools and private education centres. Since most staff deal with young children, common tasks include teaching children how to eat, wash, play and clothe themselves. This type of job can be defined as social because oftentimes it requires direct interaction with children. These positions revolve around caring for children by providing continual care services to them. Other major duties that must be mentioned are: assistance with children’s personal and social progress, establishing norms, praising their accomplishments, enabling them to relate to older children and build their self-esteem; notice any misconduct and supervise children’s play actions; educate children and apply methods to change behaviours; prepare children to maintain health and safety principles when eating or drinking; disinfect toys and play tools; read them stories and teach them skills such as painting, writing, colouring, singing; plan and coordinate leisure activities and trips; care for children in organizational environments, such as hospitals, nursery schools, medical centres or similar child care businesses.

Childcare experts must: recognize trends of social and emotional difficulties in children and inform parents about troublesome aspects of their behaviour; maintain reports on children, hourly analysis and examination about personality, activity, friends, talents, food services and treatment (when required); offer support in cooking food for children and preparing meals and snacks as well as appointed afternoon naps.
